We will be keeping the chair rail up (yep we did that ourselves) but replacing the pastel pink with another color of her choice and putting up more pictures of whatever theme she chooses. Dora and Minnie Mouse use to run the show but lately Cinderella, Tinkerbell and Ariel from The Little Mermaid have been all she talks about. **A tip for cheap pictures, find ones that you like online and print them yourself or you can have them printed for you by CVS, Walmart, etc in any size you prefer and just purchase a frame :).
Now that she is old enough to make some decisions on how she wants her room to look we thought it was the perfect time to start this project. First thing up is her bed and although her crib does transfer into a full size bed we don't think she is quite ready for that plus her room is not that big especially with all of her toys in there. With that in mind, I was on the hunt for a twin size bed for her room. I actually went to a furniture store first just to see what the prices were and it was about $200 just for a twin bed! Ain't nobody got time for that! So on to my favorite spot, the thrift store! I looked at my local Goodwill and Salvation Army and could not find anything so I went to the thrift store where I found my vanity and SCORE!! Found this twin headboard for only $6.99! $6.99!!!! I was shocked by this price! Although it was in rough shape and the paint was chipping like crazy, it had great structure and was very sturdy.
So I showed Amaya and asked her what color she wanted it to be and she said purple. I didn't want the purple to be overwhelming so I convinced her to add in some white also. We have not picked out any bedding yet, but I figured it would not be hard to find little girl's bedding with purple in it, plus that's what she wanted. And I'm willing to give her what she wants if it stops her from coming into our bed in the middle of the night!
Because she is at the age where she wants to help with everything, after I sanded it down I let her help me wipe it down so it was clean and ready for painting. I was having a hard time deciding what I wanted to paint purple and what I wanted to paint white, so I asked the toddler what she wanted. Lol! She told me and I went to work. I let her help me paint some of the white areas and after about 5 minutes she said she was done. Hahaha! But here is what the finished project looks like, she loves it and I do too!
I will be on the lookout for a twin bed frame from the thrift store, but we will be purchasing brand new mattresses. Her dresser is currently a light natural wood color (the same color as her crib) so we haven't decided yet if we will just leave it as is or if we will repaint it white and get her some new knobs to revamp it. This is not a project that will be completed in one day so I will update along the way as we complete each project. One thing that is apparent immediately is that decorating a nursery with no one living in it yet is much easier than trying to decorate with an active toddler! Lol
Here is the break down on this project:
Headboard- $6.99 Miracle Hill Thrift Store
Imperial lilac 8oz paint - $2.98 Lowes (free with coupon)
Pure white 8oz paint- $2.98 Lowes (free with coupon)
So a complete total of only $6.99 (no tax at thrift stores) for this entire project. The 8oz sample paints were more than enough to complete the headboard. I'm very excited to see everything come together and can't wait for it to be completed!
